A Can of Peas

Have you ever looked into a can of peas?
Did you see God’s reflection shine?
See His rain and sunshine, warmth and love
In each leaf of the green pea vine?

Did you notice the pod holding each pea safe,
As our Father cradles each child,
Holding him safe in sheltering arms,
Safe from the wind and the wild?

These little peas are tiny,
Their differences are small;
Our neighbors, too, are different,
But the Good Lord loves us all.

But the peas are not useful while cuddled there,
E’en though ‘tis a safe place to hide:
So we, too, must leave the sheltering arms,
Although we would wish to abide

Those peas are put through the fire and the heat
To make them so pleasant to eat.
Perhaps that’s the reason God seasons His child
With life’s tempests: to bring out the sweet.

Yes, my friend, did you look in the can
And notice God there with the peas?
He succors them as He succors you
When He finds you down on your knees!
